A success worth celebrating! Things are looking good for the 'ekupu'u! After 80 years, Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll) is home once again to this little endangered bird, also known as the Laysan finch, one of Hawai‘i's last remaining honeycreepers. This summer, a team from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and partners released 100 birds who immediately began the busy bird tasks of exploring and nest building. 'Ekupu'u became extinct on Midway in the 1940's when rats were accidentally introduced to the island. This translocation project is part of the effort to protect the population in case of a catastrophic event like a severe storm.
